The Good Shepherd
for SAB chorus, piano, and flute
text from John 10:27-28, Henry W. Baker, and Isaac Watts, adapt. by ZMH
music by ZMH, with RESIGNATION and ST. COLUMBA
"This piece skillfully weaves several different melodic and textual strands together. Highben first sets verses from John 10 to a newly composed melody, presented by the men. As this melody repeats, he adds the first stanza of My Shepherd, You Supply My Need, set to RESIGNATION, then adds a soprano countermelody. After a brief interlude, the piece concludes with the final stanza of The King of Love My Shepherd Is, set to ST. COLUMBA. Motives from the countermelody and the John 10 melody return, bringing the anthem to a peaceful close."
